I really enjoyed all the studios we did during this unit. The first studio we did was a political cartoon. For this we studied Thomas Hart Benton and Diego Rivera. These artist would take controversial political topics and turn them into cartoons. For my political cartoon I showed a picture of before and after the no child left behind act. Political cartoons really represent stories because often times controversial topics have a big story behind them.
The next studio we did was the Faith Ringold story quilt. The story quilts always tell a story, hence the name. You are supposed to pick an event or story and draw a picture and then make a quilted pattern as the edges that may be able to help add to the picture or the story. In my story quilt I drew a picture of the time when I got back from a walk and found a mouse in my room. I was so scared to go back into my room because I am terrified of mice!
The last studio was Jean Shin's found objects. I think this idea really encompasses stories because the artist will take an everyday object and turn it into something that it may not be, that has a story behind it. Pink states, "We are our stories. We compress years of experience, thought, and emotion into a few compact narratives that we convey to others and tell to ourselves" (p. 115). This quote is true of any story we tell. Stories connect to so many things such as relationships, identity and celebration.
