For this project, I made an example postcard for my lesson plan. On the front I drew a pilgrim family and on the back I wrote a leter from the perspective of a pilgrim. I unfortunately cannot find my project anywhere so I do not have a picture :( I think it might have gotten thrown away in class because it was so small.
Unit 4 Reflection:
I really enjoyed the studios for this unit. Celebration can be tied into several of the other units that we have studied. More than anything, celebration relates to stories which ties back into identity. When you tell about a celebration, you are also telling about a story. Pink (2006) states that, "We are our stories. We compress years of experience, thought, and emotion into a few compact narratives that we convey to others and tell to ourselves" (p.115). The first project we does was the finger puppets. The inspirational artist was Nick Cave who created wearable artwork. This can be used in celebration, and adds to the fun of it. Play (2006) also states that, "People rarely succeed in anything unless they are having fun doing it" (p.187). We has humans like to have fun, and celebrating is a big way that we do that. I would love to use the finger puppets in my classroom. I think it is a great way to integrate art and literacy by using plays and having students create characters.
The next project we did was the magazine cover. I really liked this project because it took an every day event and turned it into something bigger-something worth celebrating. The inspirational artist was Norman Rockwell. Norman Rockwell was known for drawing/painting people in everyday situations, and tended to focus on the humorous aspects of life. He really embraced the idea of celebrations and stories. He found meaning in events that may people would pass up, and really taught people to enjoy every aspect of life. I would use this in my classroom to help kids realize that their life is full of meaning and fun, as long as they look for it. Putting their face on the cover of a magazine is a fun, and exciting thing for kids to be able to do.
