Unit 1: Identity Reflection
I really enjoyed the Identity unit studios. Using the Disney character was a great idea. I think it is really cool to take known characters and then pick one that relates to you, and then presenting it in a way that represents your identity. Elliot Eisner says that “The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said”(2002). This is seen in the identity project because students are able to communicate their identity through the arts and representing themselves from a different perspective. Some students may have trouble vocalizing their feelings about something, or expressing themselves. However, art gives students who are a little more shy the opportunity to deliver a message, or express themselves in ways they may not have been able to.
The second project was the merging the dog and human bodies. Although this was a fun project, I didn’t think there was a whole lot of meaning to it in terms of identity. It does show multiple perspectives though. Eisner also says that “The arts celebrate multiple perspectives” (2002). Students can see this type of art through many different perspectives and can even get multiple meanings.
